ORAL EXAMS

General dentistry encompasses a broad range of diseases and disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region. Everyone should see a general dentist for routine oral health examinations, twice-yearly cleanings, and treatment of routine oral health complications, such as minor tooth decay. General dentistry is as much about prevention as it is about treatment. Patients who visit a general dentist can expect professional oral health care, as well as education and advisement about self-care between office visits.

ORAL CANCER SCREENING

Oral cancer starts in the cells of the mouth, tongue or throat. Oral cancer screening is usually a routine part of a dental examination. In this exam, the professional team at Bayshore Dental Centre will feel for lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, face, and inside your mouth.

DIGITAL X-RAYS

Dentists use X-rays to help diagnose damage and disease that is not visible during a clinical dental examination. How often X-rays, or radiographs, should be taken depends on specific factors such as an individual’s current oral health, age, risk for disease and any signs or symptoms of oral disease. Bayshore Dental Centre employs the use of digital radiography which requires 90% lesser dose compared to film. In digital imaging, instant images are available and diagnostic accuracy of the detection of decay and other problems is increased.

ORAL SURGERY

Tooth extractions are routine dental procedures used to remove decayed, damaged or otherwise problematic teeth. Drs. Mehta and Redgrift will make every effort to preserve natural teeth, although sometimes an extraction is necessary. Depending on which teeth are removed, they may be replaced with a dental implant or another oral prosthetic.

ROOT CANALS

Root canals are valuable dental procedures used to treat and preserve teeth with badly infected roots. The pulp is the live portion of the tooth that extends into the root and contains nerve endings and tissues. When it becomes infected, patients can experience pain, swelling and even total tooth loss unless treated. Root canals remove the damaged parts of the tooth and infected root. In some cases, an antibiotic is prescribed to help prevent further infection within the tooth. The organic portion of the tooth that remains may be restored using a cap or crown that provides a natural appearance and normal tooth function.

GUM TISSUE CARE

Periodontal or gum disease is an infection that affects the gums and jaw bone, which can lead to a loss of gum and teeth. There are two major stages — gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the milder and reversible form; periodontal disease is often more severe. In some cases, gum surgery will be required to reverse the effect of the disease.
